On September 10, 2011, Fairmount Homes held its 22nd Benefit Auction and Barbecue—an annual event that typically draws 7,500 to 8,000 people. Hundreds of items, including colorful quilts, comforters, wall hangings, creative theme baskets, collectibles, gift certificates, outdoor furniture, plants, and special theme meals called Dining for Dollars were up for auction. Most Dining for Dollars events and selected gift certificates were sold by Silent Auction.
Special features of this years' auction included a choral program by the Weaverland Men's Chorus and two simultaneously running auction blocks, including a children’s auction and a Silent Auction. Children enjoyed barrel train rides, as well as various activities and prizes. The most anticipated attraction each year, a candy drop, was accomplished with an ultra-light plane.
There was an abundant supply of food throughout the day: a hearty breakfast by the locally popular Big John’s Catering, delicious barbecue chicken dinners, and numerous other food stands, including fresh-cut French fries, soft-serve ice cream, soft pretzels (made while you watch), donuts cooked on site, subs, ham and cheese sandwiches, hand-squeezed fresh lemonade, homemade baked goods, and much more to satisfy the hardiest of appetites.
Not only did Fairmount’s Annual Benefit Auction and Barbecue provide for an enjoyable experience for those who attended, but it presents an opportunity to support a worthy cause. While attendees enjoyed food, fellowship, and fun, the proceeds from the 2011 auction went to the Sharing Fund, which helps to cover the cost of care for residents who have exhausted their financial resources.

What a Wonderful Auction Day!
Pictured above is one of the specialty items auctioned this year, a New Holland Baler scale model. It was made by Vergil Handrich, a gentleman in his 90s from Sarasota, Florida, who is renowned for his craftsmanship. This is only one of many items donated for auction this year.
