On Saturday, September 14, Fairmount will hold its 30th Benefit Auction & Chicken Barbecue. The location will be 1100 Farm Crest Dr. on the east side of the Fairmount campus. Hundreds of items, including colorful quilts and comforters, wall hangings, creative theme baskets, specialty items, gift certificates, new furniture, and plants will be auctioned. Special theme meals called Dining for Dollars events will be sold through a silent auction.
Bidder registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. for two simultaneously running auctions. In addition to the two main auctions is a Children’s Auction at 1:45 p.m. There are many other activities to interest children as well, including barrel train rides, games, and prizes. However, the most anticipated attraction is the candy drop from an ultra-light plane at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting.
An abundant supply of food will be available throughout the day, starting at 6:30 a.m. with a hearty breakfast by the popular Big John’s Catering. Delicious barbecue chicken dinners will be available in addition to many other food stands, including 5,000 donuts made on site, fresh-cut French fries, soft-serve ice cream, soft pretzels (made while you watch), subs, ham and cheese sandwiches, roast beef and Swiss cheese sandwiches, cheeseburgers, hand-squeezed fresh lemonade, homemade baked goods, and much more. A self-serve salad bar will be available as a healthy food option, along with fresh fruit cups and smoothies.
Breakfast by “Big John’s” and the Flea Market open the day at 6:30 am. Singing by the Singing Servants Quartet at 8:30 a.m. signals the beginning of the auction at two auction blocks. Auction items include Gift Certificates, Theme Baskets, Quilts, New Furniture, Specialty Items, Lawn Furniture & Plants and a Children’s Auction. An Oliver tractor and a new 5’x 8’ Burkholder utility trailer are among the items to be auctioned. Again this year, a Quality Assurance Certified Angus steer will be auctioned as two mixed quarters and four mixed eighths.
Dining for Dollars events provide winning bidders with a chance to enjoy a dining experience with old & new friends in a homey setting. One of the Dining for Dollars events is a Harvest Banquet meal for which 150 tickets are pre-sold rather than auctioned. The family-style meal featuring poor man’s steak with mashed potatoes, green beans and numerous other side dishes will be served in the Farm Crest Community Room on October 5, 2019. Tickets are $25 each and are available now at the Wheat Ridge or Crest View front desks on a “first come, first served” basis.
Quilts, general merchandise items and theme baskets are currently on display in the Wheat Ridge lobby at Fairmount. For anyone who is unable to attend the Benefit Auction, an absentee bid form is available at the front desk of the Wheat Ridge lobby. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Sharing Fund, which helps to cover the cost of care for residents who have exhausted their financial resources.
